On Sept. 19, 2019, Shot Spotter alerted 6th District personnel of seven rounds fired at 7808 S. Sangamon. BT 662A Offi- cers Jose Hernandez and Anthony Rojas and Sergeant Alejandro Cabral, a Chi- cago Lodge 7 member, responded to a person shot. Upon arrival, they observed a victim face-down with blood oozing down his back.
The officers checked the victim and
observed an exit wound in the middle of his back. The officers and sergeant, who are all LEMART-trained, recognized this as a life-threatening injury. Sergeant Cabral retrieved a HYFIN bandage, which is used for chest wounds and helps pre- vent the possibility of a pneumothorax, which can result from an injury in this location. The officers applied pressure to stop the bleeding as well as monitored his breathing to ensure that the bandage was applied correctly. The officers main- tained their medical interventions with the victim until CFD arrived and trans-
ported him to Christ Hospital.
Due to the quick thinking and recall
of emergency medical techniques on the part of Officers Hernandez and Rojas and Sergeant Cabral, the victim was able to be treated in emergency surgery. These officers’ actions bring credit to their de- partment, their district and the FOP.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Jose Hernandez and Anthony Rojas and Sergeant Alejandro Cabral with Life Saving Awards.
