On Feb. 15, SWAT Officers Shane Coleman and Peter Jonas responded to an EMS assist call at 644 N. Lake Shore Drive, where a 22-year-old man was walking on the icy bike path and slipped into the 41-degree water. The caller was only able to give a vague location.
The SWAT officers, who were nearby on Homeland Security missions, arrived
on scene to assist CFD, who could not locate the victim. Officers Coleman and Jonas located the victim clinging to the seawall and immediately removed their heavy protective gear and formed a hu- man chain to reach the 130-Ib. victim and pull him from the icy clutches of Lake Michigan.
The victim was stabilized by CFD on
scene and transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Without the quick action and resourcefulness of the offi- cers, this victim would have perished.
It is with great appreciation that the Fraternal Order of Police Chicago Lodge 7 presents Officers Shane Coleman and Peter Jonas with Life Saving Awards.
