PREPARATION
Use the wash brush to basecoat the pieces with Midnite Blue tipped in Wedgewood Blue, avoiding the insert cuts as they swell with moisture and make it a problem to piece your project together later on. Allow it to dry and lightly sand until smooth. Use the same brush and colors tipped in Cool White and stroke the final coat down from the top. You should end up with a slightly streaky, frozen appearance.
When dry, lightly apply the basic pattern details using the stylus and transfer paper.
TREES AND MOON
As you’re painting the trees, try to avoid the other de- sign details as much as you can but don’t worry about a little overpainting. Use the no. 10/0 liner to lightly sketch in the trunk of each tree with slightly thinned Raw Sienna. Working from the top of each tree and moving downward, use the fan brush on one side to tap and swing each branch stroke, getting wider as you reach the bottom area of the tree. Use Plantation Pine tipped slightly in Avocado Dip. Use the same technique to apply the snow on the branches.
Paint the moon Winter Blue using the no. 6 shader. Lightly moisten the surface of the moon with the moist- ened sea wool sponge and then lightly sponge with Mid- nite Blue, allowing the paint and moisture to mottle to- gether softly. It should not be drippy. When dry, use the 1⁄2" angular brush and shade the top left side of the moon with Midnite Blue; highlight the front right with Cool White. Using the 1⁄4" angular brush, float the facial recesses, fol- lowing the nose line and bridge, under the eyebrows with Midnite Blue. Highlight the brow and bridge of the nose with Cool White; tint the top center edge of the face and the cheek with Boysenberry Pink.
Using the 10/0 liner paint the eyes Midnite Blue and paint the mouth stones with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Using the 1⁄8" angular, shade under the mouth stones and behind the eyes with Midnite Blue. Using the 10/0 liner, dot the eyes with Turquoise Blue and then Cool White, as well as the cheeks, nose and mouth stones.
KIM CHRISTMAS
Lightly dry-brush a moon glow around the outside edge of the moon, slightly away from the edge of the moon itself, using the no. 5/16 dome stencil and Cool White. Re- move as much of the paint from the bristles as possible before applying.
SNOW FRIEND
Use the dome stencil brushes to stipple the shape of the snowman into place first with Midnite Blue; while wet, begin stippling in Cool White from the right side to the left. The left will be the dark side. Keep the stippling spotty as this contributes to the icy look. You will begin to see a gradation of white to medium to dark blue as you work to the left. Highlight with more white as needed, keeping the dark side and the texture slightly spotty. Allow to dry and shade as needed on the left side with Midnite Blue; high- light on the right side with Cool White, using the 3⁄8" and 1⁄2" angular brushes. Using the 1⁄4" and 3⁄8" angular brushes, bring the shade under the belly of the snowman slightly under the bow and behind the ball buttons.
Shade the armpit in the same color using the 1⁄8" angu- lar brush. Paint the arms using the no. 5/0 liner tipped in Raw Sienna and Traditional Burnt Umber. Deepen with a tiny dot of Lamp (Ebony) Black on the undersides. Using the 10/0 liner, highlight with the tiniest bit of Cool White.
Paint the bow Boysenberry Pink. Using the no. 2 shader and the 1⁄8" and 1⁄4" angular brushes, shade with Cinnamon Drop and highlight with Cool White.
DEAR OL’ SANTA
Using the nos. 4 and 6 shaders, basecoat Santa’s coat and hat first with Boysenberry Pink. Allow to dry and re- paint with Cinnamon Drop. Using the 1⁄4" and 3⁄8" angu- lar brushes, shade the bottom edge, under the sleeve and fur areas, and the hat crease sections with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Tip in Cinnamon Drop to reduce darkness slightly before applying if you find it too dark to work with. The highlights are Cool White using the same brushes.
