to separate the petals of the skirt and the sections of the wings. Use a liner with Paynes Grey thinned slightly with water where needed. Swirl some comma-strokes into the wing sections using the liner brush and Titanium White.
Shoes are lined with Pine Green and a dot at the toe of Napthol Crimson. The little ribbons around the waists of fairies are done using Pine Green with Napthol Crimson berries.
FINAL DETAILS
The center of leaves have little pollen dots of Yellow Oxide and Tita- nium White. These are loosely placed with the end of the liner brush. Add a Titanium White highlight to each eye and top of each cheek.
To add a shine to the candies, load a filbert with Titanium White and Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium. Float through the center of each candy cane with the moisture to the outside of the candy, including the beads around the plate. While this is still wet, flip the brush and repeat float immediately next to the first one with the float of color going to the opposite side of the candy. This is called a flip float and creates a roundness to the candy canes. You can do this on the other hard candies as well as down the center of the red stripe of the rib- bon candy.
Hint: Glazing is a technique to add sheer color over an already painted element. You can use either water or Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium for this.
The leaves have a little bit of Burgundy glazed into the shaded areas. This is random and only where you feel you’d like to have a little more color.
Glaze a little Amethyst into the shadow areas of the fairy skirts but don’t overdo.
Double-check your shadows and strengthen to create depth, especially in the candy cluster in the center of the plate. Let dry completely and varnish with Jo Sonja Satin Varnish.

Sue Pedersen has always loved art and took
art classes in high school and college. Even when
she was concentrating on marriage and a family,
she always found a way to take workshops and
classes. Carl Larson, the teacher of one of those
classes, introduced her to the wonderful world of
Bauernmalerei. Sue also enjoyed classes taught
by Michele Walton cda and Jo Sonja Jansen mda, who woke up her sense of creativity, whimsy, and original design. In 1999, she joined SDP and began to teach classes. She currently resides in Gilroy, Calif., with Ron, her husband of 42 years. Sue is a member of Monterey Peninsula Decorative Artists, Northern California Decorative Artists and Northern California Art Fusion. She teaches classes at BookSmart in Morgan Hill, Calif.
