The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2015
    PREPARATION
This project is done on a 12" x 12" (30.5 x 20.5cm) piece of Suede Paper. I cut 2" (5.1cm) off the top and side to make it 10" x 10" (25.4 x 25.4cm) so that I had some scraps to use for practice. I then chose to tape down the corners to a 12" x 12"(30.5 x 30.5cm) piece of illustration board, which was used as backing board when framing.
Using your 9B graphite pencil and white Saral, transfer the dark lines of the design to the velour. Do not transfer the feath- er lines; you get a more natural flow to the feathers if you add those later. Refer to Step 1 to see how many lines to transfer. Do not use excess pressure since velour indents very easily.
LET’S PAINT
BACKGROUND SHADOWS
Remove the paper from the Bluish Gray 727.5 soft pastel. Half a stick will work well for this area. Rub the long side of the pastel along the sandpaper to flatten it slightly. Wipe it on a dry towel.
Softly place a layer of this color behind the egret (Step 2). With your finger, smooth the outside edge into the back- ground. A second layer can be added where needed. Don’t forget the area under the head and between the neck and body. Add shading under the wing and leg area as well.
