62 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 2, 2015
When Hofcraft sent me this basket to create a design for, my immediate inspiration was a picnic table displaying a smorgasbord of warm-weather food. Of
course, a picnic table requires a tablecloth. I love paint- ing on fabric backgrounds attached to wood surfaces. This is a fun project, and you can make as much or as little work out of it as you want. I chose to use fabric for the tablecloth, but you could paint the checkered background directly on the wooden lid. The possibilities are endless! Do what you choose and have fun with this piece.
PREPARATION
Seal the lid and basket with DecoArt Multi-Purpose Seal- er. Let dry. Gently sand it smooth. If using fabric, cut your chosen fabric so it is 1" to 2" (2.5 to 5 cm) bigger than your surface. Wash the sizing out of the fabric with soap and wa- ter and rinse. While the fabric is damp, iron it well so no wrinkles show up in your piece after it is painted.
If the fabric you’ve chosen is thin, dark areas of the wood underneath might show through. If necessary, apply a basecoat of Snow White to the wood surface. When dry, apply a heavy layer of DecoArt DuraClear Satin Varnish to the top of the lid. While this is wet, position the fabric on top of the lid. Use the plastic gloves to avoid getting varnish on your fingers. Using your fingers, smooth out any wrinkles in the fabric. Using the 1" wash, apply more varnish, pushing down with the brush to saturate the fabric and the wood. Let dry completely.
Trace the designs onto the Canary tracing paper. When the fabric and wood are completely dry, sand the lid. This step will dull the fabric, but it should not damage it. Remove sanding debris with a damp paper towel.
