The Shelf
The shelf adds more room in the basket and is a nice ad- dition to the interior. The shelf can be used outside the picnic basket to elevate a special picnic food item.
PREPARATION
Seal the top of the shelf with DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer. Let dry. Gently sand smooth. If using fabric, cut your chosen fab- ric to be 1" to 2" (2.5 to 5 cm) bigger than your surface. Wash the sizing out of the fabric with soap and water; rinse. While the fabric is damp, iron thoroughly to remove all wrinkles.
If the fabric chosen is thin, dark areas of the wood could pos- sibly show through. If necessary, apply a basecoat of Snow White to the wood surface. When dry, apply a heavy layer of DecoArt DuraClear Satin Varnish over shelf surface. While wet, position fabric onto top surface. Use plastic gloves to avoid getting varnish on your fingers. With fingers, smooth out any wrinkles that oc- cur. Using 1" wash brush, apply more varnish, pushing down the brush to saturate the fabric and the wood. Let dry completely.
Trace the designs onto the transfer paper. When the fabric and wood are completely dry, sand the shelf surface. This will dull the fabric, but should not damage it. Remove sanding debris with a damp paper towel or a tack cloth.
Using scissors, cut off the excess fabric. Turn the shelf upside- down on a self-healing cutting mat or old cardboard. Using the craft knife, trim excess fabric as closely to the edge as possible. Us- ing a fine grit sandpaper or nail file, clean the edges of the strings by sanding downward. If the fabric accidentally loosens, add a small amount of DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer to the wood and fabric to saturate the edges. Allow to dry completely.
