Annette Brooks, Redwood Decorative Artists member, passed away in April 2017. She resided in Carlotta, Calif., and had been a member of SDP since 2010.
Joan Clement, Cactus Wren Decorative Artists member, passed away in September 2017.
“Joan and I go back about 30 years. We met when we were taking oil painting classes at O’Malley’s Lumberyard. Not long after, she asked me to teach acrylic painting classes at her shop, Paint ‘N’ Things, in Mesa, Ariz. It was usually filled with happy students eager to learn. Joan taught the most beautiful large or small landscapes in oils, and helped students learn to paint from a photo with her help. Joan also had many other teachers that taught fine art oils, other teachers that taught differing styles of acrylic painting, and even two teachers that taught hand carving, mostly folk art figures.
Joan’s shop, Paint ‘N’ Things, was one of the first to open in the Phoenix, Ariz., area. Eventually there were 21 shops in the surrounding areas;
now there is only one left in Glendale, Ariz. Joan had the largest collection of painting books. The kitchen and part of the living room were full of books. She also had three areas full of all kinds of wood and metal surfaces to paint on, as well as
a good selection of brushes, paints and supplies. Each year she would go to the Creative Painting Convention in Las Vegas, and take eight or nine classes, which gave her a start on what she would teach the following year. Many of the painters in the Valley took classes from Joan or one of her other teachers. I taught there for over 20 years. She and her shop will be missed.
I watched her children grow, and loved her dear husband, Don, who was always so helpful and smiling! They had the most wonderful loving relationship. Joan and Donald will meet again
in heaven. She will be missed down here with so many loving children, grandchildren, and great- grandchildren, and former students.”
