How Conference Classes are Selected
DIANA PFAU, Teacher’s Committee Chair
The Teacher’s Committee is proud and happy with the
classes for the 2018 Conference. There were over 200 won- derful submissions, which was very challenging to narrow down to 56 classes. The Teacher’s Committee wants to thank everyone who took the time and effort to submit.
SELECTION PROCESS
Curious how the final choices are made? We would like to share the process with you. Through the years the selec- tion process has continuously been improved to make it as fair and objective as possible. Every submission was voted on by the committee using a point system. The committee consisted of six members, all with extensive painting and teaching experience. Each member of the committee voted independently and anonymously on all the submissions. Each member assigned points to each project. Five points was the highest, one point the lowest. All votes were then forwarded to the staff at the SDP office, who tabulated and averaged the scores. Only then were decisions made for classes to be offered.
We had room for 56 classes. All classes were ultimately chosen based solely on the point score average. On the first vote, the committee did not have access to the teacher’s names; only the medium, description and photos,
skill level, length, cost, category, and any additional supplies required.

Here is the most exciting part – the final choices were based solely on concrete facts. Surprisingly, the choices were very clear-cut. Slots were filled starting with the highest scoring classes, then the next lower numbers were used. The hard work comes from the staff in planning the class dura- tion, the schedule, room size, balancing painting mediums, etc. Believe me, that was much harder than voting on the submissions.
Knowing there was no way to play favorites and that choices were made objectively, makes us proud to have done our best in treating every submission fairly. Thank you to every society member who submitted a project for consider- ation. Together we work to build a successful conference.
