PREPARATION
BACKGROUND
STEP 1: To stain your surface, use Jo Sonja’s Walnut and Cherry Wood Stain Gels (1:1) to make a reddish brown stain. Do not sand surface before or after staining or painting. You will want the roughness caused by the water-based products, which lift the wood fibers. This will help with the faux finish effect. Add some Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium to the stain to thin. Apply with 3⁄4" oval wash brush to entire surface and let dry; do not sand. You can use a hair dryer for this part, but once you apply the wax you must let it air dry after each application of wax and color.
STEP 2: Rub painted surface with a cheap wax candle. Wher- ever you rub, paint will not stick so try not to make a design with the wax, but make the strokes random, following the wood grain. The effect will look like paint that has worn away. Make sure to pay attention to the edges as well; don’t just apply wax to the center of the piece. Using the 3⁄4" oval wash brush, give the wood a coat of Tingle’s Pond or a color of your choice that has been thinned with water. Dry naturally.
With a safety razor, scrape the surface holding the razor per- pendicular to the surface. Do not dig into surface; you are just cleaning away the wax. You may want to place paper or some other disposable surface under your piece to keep your work area clean and protect any other painting projects. Wipe piece care- fully to remove any wax residue and proceed to the next step.
