P. 77

brush or the ultra round brush. Apply two coats of paint. See Butterfly Step 1 of the Step-by-Steps on page 74. EMBELLISHMENTS: Paint the Flourish Topper and the small laser cut hearts with Snow (Titanium) White. Apply as many coats as needed to cover, painting the inner and outer edges as well.
STEP 2
I stenciled the scroll from the Spirited Stencil at the base of the plaque to anchor the iris. Tape the stencil in the desired position – see finished project. Touch the size 4 stencil brush into the edge of the Blue Violet, move to a clean area of your palette and work the paint into the bristles. You do not want any surprises when you apply the paint to the plaque. Begin swirling the brush on an uncut area of the stencil. Gently work your way over into the cut area, stenciling paint through the cut out design. As long as you do not have a lot of paint on your brush you should have a smooth scroll when you finish. Carefully lift the stencil off and clean with a wet wipe or warm water and a soft brush.
STEP 4
IRIS: Streak Cadmium Yellow on the tip of the center pur- ple and pull down very fine lines with the 10/0 liner brush. Tap Orange Flame using the tip of a filbert brush to cre- ate the beard area on three of the bottom petals. After the Orange Flame dries, tap Cadmium Yellow lightly on top.
This is visible on the finished piece.
BACKGROUND: Scoop up Aqua with the 1" wash brush and brush it over the entire plaque. Follow this with Turquoise Sparkle and Sapphire Blue. While this applica- tion of paint is still wet sprinkle with Gold Dust Glitter and keep flat until dry. After the plaque is dry you can gently shake off the extra Gold Dust Glitter.
STEP 5
FINISHING DETAILS: Glue the rhinestones onto the Flourish Topper, the laser cut hearts and the stenciled scroll using the Super Tacky Glue. After the rhinestones have dried, glue the embellishments to the plaque.
I display my plaque on a small tabletop easel. If you wish to hang it, drill small holes equidistant from each other through the Flourish Topper and insert a thin wire.
The technique for all elements in this step is to cover the tips fully in the color listed using the ultra round brush and, while the paint is wet, to pull fine lines onto the base color. On the last coat use the 10/0 liner brush to pull the strokes. If necessary to achieve a pleasing transition you many need to pull fine lines of the base color into the tip color. This will take at least two coats, maybe three.
IRIS: Paint the tips of the leaves Sour Apple and pull thin strokes down into the Festive Green. Paint Blue Violet at the base of each leaf and pull up to create the shading. Paint the tips of the petals Dioxazine Purple pulling thin strokes down into the Snow (Titanium) White. This will take two coats to cover. On the six top petals pull one long fine line most of the way down; this is a vein line. See Iris Step 2 of the Step-by-Steps on page 74.
BUTTERFLY: Paint the tips of the wings Bahama Blue and pull thin strokes down into the Blue Violet using the same technique as described above. See Butterfly Step 2 of the Step-by-Steps on page 74.
EMBELLISHMENTS: Tint all laser cut pieces with Pea- cock Teal, Blue Violet, and Dioxazine Purple using the fin- ished photo as a reference.
STEP 3
Now you will apply DecoArt Glamour Dust Glitter Paints to the elements.
Apply Emerald to the main part of the leaves and Lime- light to the tips. Paint the iris petals Purple Passion and the butterfly wings Aqua. The embellishments are painted with Aqua and Purple Passion and sprinkled with Gold Dust Glitter while wet.
