    LET’S PAINT BACKGROUND
Apply a light coat of the DecoArt Traditions Extender & Blending Medium evenly to the surface (excluding the band around the top). Using the no. 1 wash brush, apply a band of Antique Maroon below the band at the top and then along the bottom of the wastebasket. Use the mop brush to blend the color softly into the background. Dry completely with a hair dryer. Add another light coat of the DecoArt Traditions Extender & Blending Medium and repeat this step to deepen the color. Mop the colors softly to have a nice even blend of colors. Dry completely and then add a coat of the DecoArt Glazing Medium to the entire surface. When dry, transfer your pattern with light graphite paper.
GRAPES COLOR MIXES
Refer to Color Mixes above.
Following the numbers on your pattern, basecoat each of the grapes using the no. 6 filbert brush. (See Step 1 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.)
Grape No. 1: Dark Medium Mix
Grape No. 2: Medium Mix
Grape No. 3: Light Medium Mix
The negative space between the grapes is filled in with the Dark Mix using the no. 1 round brush.
To establish separation and form between all of the grapes, shade each grape where it goes under or around another grape and under the leaves using a float of the Low Dark Mix and the no. 6 shader brush. (See Step 1 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.)
To build the round shape of the grapes we will be dry- brushing the colors using the Mezzaluna brush. Load the dry brush with paint and wipe off most of the color onto a paper towel. In a circular motion rub the brush onto the grapes to create a soft highlight. As we continue to build the colors lighter and lighter add each color to a smaller and smaller area. This will give the grape its shape. When changing colors you can use a dirty brush; just wipe off onto the paper towel and keep the brush dry.
GRAPE ONE
The first highlight is dry-brushed using the Medium Mix. This is done on the largest area of the grapes. (See Step 2 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) The next high- light is the Light Medium Mix. The light source for our grapes is the upper right so try to keep your lighter high- lights focused in that area. Since these are recessed in the back they don’t need to be very bright. (See Step 3 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.)
GRAPE TWO
The first highlight on these grapes is added with the Light Medium Mix. (See Step 2 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) The second highlight is the Light Mix. (See Step 3 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) The third highlight is added to a smaller area with the Highlight Mix. (See Step 4 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.)
GRAPE THREE
The first highlight is the Light Mix. (See Step 2 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) The second highlight is the Highlight Mix. (See Step 3 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) The brightest highlight on these grapes is done with Snow (Titanium) White. (See Step 4 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.)
Using the no. 10 shader brush, shade the lower left of all the grapes with a wash of the Dark Mix. Using the same brush, highlight the top and right side of the grapes with Chartreuse Yellow. (See Step 5 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) The reflected light at the bottom right of the grapes is added with a very soft float of Country Blue using the no. 4 shader brush. If you need any extra highlights to make your grapes pop a bit, go back and add a little Snow (Tita- nium) White to make them stand out more. (See Step 6 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.)
STEMS
Using the no. 2 round brush, add the stems with Sable Brown. (See Step 1 of the Step-by-Steps on page 79.) Shade
