 PREPARATION

• SPRING 2018 DECORATIVEPAINTERS.ORG
Sand surface and wipe off any dust. Basecoat with Claret Rose+Jo Sonja All Purpose Sealer (2:1). Let dry. Sand again and wipe off dust. Crumple a piece of tissue paper and then carefully smooth out. Trim to allow a 1" (2.54 cm) overage all the way around surface. Apply a very generous coat of Jo Sonja All Purpose Sealer with a large brush. Immediately position tissue paper over surface and pat into place, smoothing wrinkles as much as possible or as desired, being careful not to tear the tissue paper. The more dimension the wrinkles have, the harder the strokes will be to pull. Let tissue ex- cess hang over edges until completely dry. When dry, remove ex- cess tissue by rubbing the surface edge with sandpaper or an emery board. Secure any loose edges of tissue with additional Jo Sonja All Purpose Sealer. Basecoat surface with two coats of Claret Rose with- out sealer. Transfer design with white graphite.
PAINTING TIPS
Most basecoats will take two coats. I used the no. 4 round brush for most basecoating using shape-following strokes. Use a smaller round brush or Dresden liner brush for the smaller, detailed design elements. To aid in doing the strokes, place a small amount of Jo Sonja Magic Mix Medium on acrylic palette (not a wet palette). Tip brush into Magic Mix to thin the paint, either before or after loading brush with paint. This allows you to have a better consistency for strokework, will keep the paint wet long enough for you to remove unwanted strokes, and will set the strokes when dry. At any time, you may give your painting a light coat of Magic Mix to act as a sealer so that paints will not lift as you are working on the design.
