130 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 3, 2014
As we prepare for holiday ornament exchanges, I would like to follow up on my December 2013 online Skillbuilder entitled Doodle-Tangles. My family ab-
solutely loved these black-and-white doodle-tangle orna- ments, and they challenged me to create them in color this year—a challenge I readily accepted.
Through trial and error I’ve determined that this par- ticular plastic ornament makes the perfect surface, and Pris- macolor Premier Colored Pencils are the best medium for adding color to the ornaments. They contain just the right amount of wax for great adherence to this sort of surface. Other brands of colored pencil can be used, but avoid those with a chalky texture, because handling of the ornament will cause the chalk to be removed.
In this article I will describe the steps taken to apply color to my favorite designs. The Step-by-Step contains all elements used on my ornament. You can choose the elements you like, applying them to your ornament however you would like.
Read Painting Tips on page 133 before starting the project.
