Planning a Fun Chapter Event
DONNA ROSKAMP – Education Committee
Every now and then it’s exciting to do something different.
Of course, our regular chapter meetings are fun; however, every now and then you can spice it up and hold an event to which members can bring guests. If the guests have a good time they may want to become members. So make sure to bring membership forms to share with your guests.
An event that is entertaining for members and guests is a Round Robin. In this article you will learn how to plan and put on a Round Robin Event for your chapter.
STEP 1: Create a mailing list so you can send out invitations. Collect addresses at one of your luncheons or other special events. Make sure to collect the addresses of guests, too!
STEP 2: Secure a location suitable for your event. Next find five teachers to teach a small project using five different methods. For example, there could be a project in acrylics, colored pencil, watercolor, stenciling, and watercolor pencil. Each project should run for 30 minutes, or however long you choose to make it.
STEP 3: Once the location and teachers are secured, send an electronic invitation through a website, such as Evite,
for free. Invitations need to be sent out a month before the event. Be sure to request an RSVP so you will know how many members and guests to plan for.
STEP 4: When you have your list of attendees, divide them into five groups. Have each group start at a different project table. Groups will rotate to different projects every 30 minutes. STEP 5: Most of us are enticed by yummy treats, so be sure to provide them! Perhaps start off with a light breakfast to break the ice, provide snacks and beverages and, of course, lunch and desserts. Door prizes through the day would adds to the entertainment.
FINAL: Throughout the event be sure to make announce- ments about the benefits of being a member of the SDP and the local chapters. Perhaps offer an incentive for becoming a member that day.
Well planned get-togethers like this creates a beginner- friendly event that members can easily invite guests to without intimating them. Once they see how much fun it is, they will want to become a member.
The Boots & Brushes of San Antonio held a Round Robin Event

Five teachers taught a small proj- ect, using five different methods which included two acrylic, one watercolor, one colored pencil and one stenciling. Each project was lasted of 30 minutes. There were many happy faces, proud of their paintings. Everyone agreed this should be an annual event.

This provided an educational opportunity for non-painters and members to experience the different mediums.
