STEP 9: Use the no. 12 filbert brush to dry-brush Snow (Titanium) White onto all of the petals. First dampen the filbert brush then blot it well. Pick up Snow (Titanium) White and blend it well on both sides of the brush. Gently wipe both sides of the brush on a dry paper towel.
Place the tip of the filbert brush on the tip of a petal then pull down the length of the petal. Flip the brush over and repeat. Then use the chisel edge of the brush to add fine lines down into the shaded areas.
Do all of the petals this way and then repeat until the petals are quite bright. Clean the brush.
STEP 10: Make a wash of Cadmium Yellow and apply it to all of the petals with the no. 12 filbert brush. Let dry. STEP 11: Use Snow (Titanium) White and the filbert brush to dry-brush the petals once again using the same method as in Step 9. Leave some of the Cadmium Yellow showing through and build up the highlights mostly on the top petals.
Deepen the shading on the petals with soft floats of Deep Midnight Blue using the angle shader brush.
STEP 12: Use the 1⁄2" deerfoot brush to stipple in a wash of Snow (Titanium) White on the flower center. Dampen the brush and blot it. Then dip the toe of the brush into the washy Snow (Titanium) White and apply the paint
with the bristles of the brush on the top edge of the center, touching into the shaded areas of some petals.
Rinse the brush then load the toe into washy Raw Si- enna, stippling the flower center all over.
Rinse the brush and repeat with washy stippling of Cadmium Yellow.
Use the liner brush to add some lines on the petals coming from the shaded areas. Thin a mix of Neutral Grey+Deep Midnight Blue. Pull very fine lines up a little into the light areas.
Use a fine pointed stylus to add dots of Black Green and dots of Snow (Titanium) White to the flower center, spilling some onto the petals. Allow to dry completely.
FINISHING
Apply a coat of the DecoArt Media Modeling Paste to the sides of the wood canvas using the back of a palette knife. Allow to dry completely. Dry-brush with Emperor’s Gold using the filbert brush by lightly dragging the paint over the raised texture of the modeling paste.
Erase any visible chalk or graphite lines. Use the flat wash brush to apply two coats of Americana DuraClear Soft Touch Varnish over the top and sides, allowing the first coat to dry completely.
