STEP 2 BASECOATS
The purpose of basecoating is to give each element the correct local value.
I use one to three values to achieve this purpose. Please refer to Step-by-Step 2 on page 45. You don’t need to do any smooth blending at this point. You don’t need to paint rosebuds either. They can be painted after the underneath elements have been painted.
WARM LEAVES – 1, 2, 3 & 4
Warm Green Mix+Burnt Umber (1:tch)
Pick up Cadmium Yellow Pale for the lighter areas.
COOL LEAVES – THE REST OF THE LEAVES
Cool Green+Burnt Umber (1:tch)
Pick up Titanium White for the lighter areas.
ROSES
Roses are painted grayer as the position recedes. Rose 1 is the lightest and roses 4 and 5 are darkest since they are located on the back.
ROSES 1, 2 & 3
Warm Gray Mix
Pick up some more Black Mix for the dark and more Warm White Mix for the lighter area.
ROSES 4 & 5
Cool Gray
Pick up some more Black Mix for the dark and more Tita- nium White for the lighter area.

STEP 3
PAINTING DETAILS
Each element is refined with three to five values.
I use the dirty brush technique. I usually use two brushes. I paint with the medium value then pick up some lighter value with one brush. Then use a second brush with the medium value and pick up some darker value. I try not to get the lighter value and darker value mixed.
Refer to Step-by-Step 3 on page 45 and the black and white photo for the value placements.
