Canvas is available at Hobby Lobby, Jerry’s Artarama, or online.
This design was initially inspired by a little elf, which proudly stands on a shelf in my Fairy Cabinet. During my life, I always thought it was nice to offer a gift that was bigger than one’s self. How cute is this! This design can be painted on canvas, a plate, or a shovel. Pick your surface and have fun painting the giving elf.
PREPARATION
Sand, dust, and seal all wood pieces.
Using the 3⁄4" wash brush, basecoat all pieces, including the canvas, with Warm White. Be sure to cover each piece well. This may require a couple of coats.
When surfaces are dry, transfer the pattern onto the trac- ing paper and apply the basic pattern lines with your stylus and graphite paper for the boughs, elf and the pinecone.
Each area to paint will be given separately, but some areas can be worked after others are completed. You will decide as you go.
If painting the shovel, the surface is four separate pieces cut out by your wood cutter. The total size is 30" tall x 9" wide (76.20 x 22.86 cm). A 1⁄2" (1.27 cm) dowel, 12" (30.48 cm) long, fits inside the top snowflake and the top of the shovel. The amount exposed after being inserted is about 10 1⁄4" (26.04 cm) but it can be longer if desired. Make a tem- plate from pattern for the 3⁄4" (1.91 cm) wood piece which fits on top of the main large surface. The largest surface is 1⁄4" (.64 cm) birch plywood for the theme. The snowflake at the top is cut from 3⁄4" (1.91 cm) wood. (See pattern on page 91 for templates of the shovel and star.)
