LET’S PAINT
All three surfaces will be painted similarly. The differences are the fin- ishing of each surface. The plate requires measuring for checks around the edge. There are no checks on the canvas, but I have painted a cute hanging knob for the ribbon to hang the picture. The shovel has four sep- arate parts, all addressed below.
SKY
TOP HALF
Using the 3⁄4" wash brush, apply Sea Breeze (thinned with water) in small sections over the patterns of pines, elf and pinecone.
While the blue is still wet, hold the alcohol spritz bottle about 12" from the surface and spritz the sky gently. Alcohol will separate the blue color to create an interesting sky design. You should be able to see a fair amount of this sky design between the boughs and around the elf and pinecone.
When the sky has dried, use the no. 8 filbert brush to place random areas of washy Hauser Light Green in areas close to the pine bough lines. Take care to not brush harshly over the already placed blue – be gentle.
GROUND
With the Hauser Light Green already dry on random areas of the ground, use the chisel edge of the angular brush to loosely add some darker green colors. Apply Plantation Pine then Hauser Dark Green with a washy appearance. Dry. (See Step-by-Steps 2 and 3 of elf on page 87.)
Using the no. 1 liner brush, paint the grass blades with Hauser Dark Green. Always start the short blades from the ground and go upward to end with a point.
When you are ready to paint the flowers, use a double-ended stylus to make some dots with Yellow Ochre+Warm White and others with True Red+Warm White. After these dots are dry, make some dots with the Gold Glitter.
PINES
Refer to Step-by-Steps on page 87 for pine boughs.
Using the no. 1 liner brush, apply lines for boughs with Plantation Pine. To paint the boughs, pull thin lines using the no. 1 liner brush starting
from the main bough line and pulling it outward. You may curve the lines or bring them out straight. Be consistent in one way or the other.
Start painting with the following colors in this progression: Hauser Dark Green, Plantation Pine, Hauser Medium Green, Hauser Light Green, and Yellow Green to highlight. When you are painting the lighter colors, place them more toward the lower ends of the boughs.
ELF
Using the no. 6 filbert brush, basecoat the clothing with True Red. Shad- ed areas are floated using the 3⁄8" angular shader brush in Deep Burgundy.
The hat is basecoated with Hauser Dark Green. Highlight the top of the hat with float of Yellow Green. Place a dot of Gold Glitter at the tip end.
