                                     CHECKED TOP PORTION – SHOVEL
(Refer to photo on page 88.)
Use a small ruler to mark off the sections on this top section of the design to create the checks. Using the no. 8 short shader brush and Lamp (Ebony) Black, basecoat in the checks with routine motion. This is not hard, but perhaps a little tedious. Clean up with your liner brush if needed.
Basecoat the outside of this section and the top edge with a couple of coats of True Red.
ASSEMBLING THE SHOVEL
Using wood glue, attach the Snowflake at the top to the handle.
Then glue the top piece of the shovel to the main surface if this has not already been done prior to painting. The handle should have a hole space to fit into on top of the shovel surface.
When the glue is dry, varnish with a coat or two of DecoArt Dura- Clear Varnish.
CHECKS FOR FINISHING PLATE
(Refer to photo on page 89.)
First measure a one-inch space along the edge of the plate.
When I am placing checks on a round surface, the easiest way I
have found to do this accurately and without too much measuring and work, is to place a little line in pencil at four even points around. Start basecoating using the short shader brush in Lamp (Ebony) Black. Place one stroke on each of the four points. Then space the next one exactly the width of the brush to leave a white check. Continue all around the edge. For the next line of checks, place the first check in the space opposite the white and so on around the plate.
Finally, use the liner brush to place a True Red line between the checks and the design.
Use the wash brush to apply a coat or two of the DecoArt Dura- Clear Varnish.
CANVAS FINISHING
In my years of designing and painting, I have developed a fun way to hang pictures without having to frame each one. I paint a 2" plain wooden door knob and add some spacer pieces plus a double-ended screw to hang with. Then I add a fun fancy ribbon or colorful cording, knotted at each end. These ends are fastened to the top edges of the can- vas with a staple gun. It works well for displaying and it is easy to install.
