While on a drive through the Hudson Valley of New York, we stopped at Tarrytown, which was made infamous by Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a story capturing the imagination of Halloween scares, mystery, and spookiness. I especially liked the narrative describing Icha- bod Crane: “He was tall and exceedingly lank, with narrow shoulders, long arms and legs, hands that dangled a mile out of his sleeves, and feet that might have served for shovels. His head was small, and flat at top, with huge ears, large green glassy eyes, and a long snipe nose, so that it looked like a weathercock perched upon his spindle neck, to tell which way the wind blew.” The story begged to be painted and will serve for generations to come in our family retelling the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane on Hollow’s Eve.
