DECORATIVE ARTISTS OF WESTERN NASSAU
Our readers might remember a Chapter Snapshot from Issue 3, 2013, of The Decorative Painter, which featured the generous “adoption” of an SDP chapter in need. Nearly every member of Decorative Artists of Western Nassau chapter suffered loss and devastation during Hurricane Sandy. Many were even completely displaced. Greater New Orleans chapter, who knew a great deal about the trials of recovering from a hurricane, decided to adopt DAWN.
Members of DAWN were touched when they received a call from GNO’s president, saying that the chapter would like to send supplies and some hand-painted comforts for their homes. DAWN members were grateful for
what they assumed would be a few brushes—but were blown away when they received six boxes full of books, surfaces, paints, and much more. After the Chapter Snapshot was published, DAWN received yet another surprise box from GNO. This one was full of adorable hand-painted scarecrow pins, one for each DAWN chapter member.
DAWN members were beyond words of gratitude, and immediately they decided to repay their sister chapter’s kindness. Chapter president Kathy Murphy came up with a plan to paint an ornament bearing the names of both chapters. Because DAWN members felt that GNO had been their angels in a time of need, a Shara Reiner angel design was chosen to illustrate the love and appreciation the chapter felt.
The wonderful ornaments were painted during one of DAWN’s regular monthly meetings and were then sent to GNO. A strong SDP sisterhood has been formed between these two chapters; both have suffered similarly and were helped by the generosity of another chapter. Their bond will surely endure for a long time to come.

BELLA VISTA DECORATIVE ARTISTS
On September 7, 2013, members of the Bella Vista Decorative Artists chapter gathered at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Bella Vista, Ark., to host a day of card playing, game playing, and fundraising. The chapter’s game and card party proved to be a great success, with more than 270 people in attendance.
The event began with lunch, which was provided by BVDA members, and then continued with various types of entertaining games. After several hours of fun, a drawing for door prizes began. Next on the agenda was a raffle of gift baskets, all of which were assembled and provided by chapter members. These
charming baskets varied in theme from “Wine and Cheese” to “BBQ Picnic.”
The Artist’s Shop, which was open to customers throughout the day, offered a myriad of hand-painted items that were donated by chapter members. Various examples of the chapter’s community service projects were also proudly displayed for the guests’ perusal. Items featured in the display consisted of memory boxes for hospitalized children, hand-painted suitcases and backpacks for foster children, and quilts for the Wounded Warrior project.
Members of the chapter worked together seamlessly to ensure that the event was well worth the time and effort. The fun and rewarding fundraiser allowed BVDA to raise $5,000, which will go a very long way in supporting future projects and endeavors.
