outer edge of the scroll. Wipe brush, reload with the Mid- dle Blue Mix, sideload with the Dark Blue Mix, and paint the form of the outside of the scroll, pressing as you paint the outer edge of the scroll. With the no. 0/0 scroller, load with Light Blue Mix that has been thinned with Walnut Oil Alkyd to an inky consistency. Add a stroke by placing the tip of the brush just under the knob. Make a nice stroke down to the base, pressing as you paint the stroke to blend into the Middle Blue Mix. With the no. 0/0 scroller, fill with Dark Blue Mix that has been thinned with Walnut Oil Alkyd, and outline the outside of the scroll. Using the no. 2 filbert, fill with thinned Light Blue Mix, and tip into the Middle Blue Mix. Paint the two inner strokes, pressing and blending as you paint them. This should have a nice variegated appearance. Repeat these steps for each scroll.
FLOWERS
Using the no. 4 short flat brush filled with Middle Blue Mix, place a stroke at the base of each petal side to side. Wipe brush and fill with Unbleached Titanium White. Paint a rounded C-stroke around the blue stroke, press- ing and blending as you form this stroke. You may repeat this stroke, but be careful not to lose the contrast. Wipe
brush, reload with Unbleached Titanium White, and paint another C-stroke just above the second stroke, pressing and blending as you paint the stroke. Place another stroke of Unbleached Titanium White if you need more balance of color. Next, wipe brush and load with Titanium White. Fill in the balance of the petal, rounding and forming as you paint the shape of the petal. Be careful to keep a nice balance of color from dark to light from the base to the tip of the petal. Outline the petal with thinned Titanium White using the no. 0/0 scroller. Wipe and reload with Ti- tanium White to make the line just inside the petal and the short lines between the two. With thinned Titanium White on a stylus, dip the dots onto the flower, follow- ing the Step-by-Step on page 57 for placement. Paint the center using the flat brush with Middle Blue Mix side- loaded with Dark Blue Mix. Fill in the circle, leaving the center unpainted. Wipe brush and load with Titanium White. Make a small circle in the center, blending as you go. Blend well, keeping the nice gradation of color light to blue. You may want to outline the circle with thinned Dark Blue Mix. Make two teardrop strokes of Dark Blue Mix with the teardrop brush, placing them in opposite directions. Dot the circle, the petal bases, and the center dot with thinned Titanium White.
