94 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
Ipainted this project in the American folk art style of Ru- fus Porter. Many people enjoy this style of artwork be- cause it is gender neutral, and both men and women love
to create these paintings!
PREPARATION
Basecoat the entire canvas with two coats of Light But- termilk. Let it dry completely. To create the stippled back- ground, dampen the surface by lightly brushing it with water. Pounce Asphaltum over the entire surface with a damp sea sponge, and then let it dry. Repeat the dampening/painting process with Driftwood, and then with Snow White, letting the surface dry between coats. Transfer the land and water lines very lightly (the light washes of paint you’ll be applying won’t cover dark transfer lines).
