BASIC INFORMATION
Transfer
It is a good idea to attach your paper to a portable surface; then you can move, turn it in different directions, and apply many different strokes.
I use a 16" x 20" foam backing board and slip a Strathmore Bristol Vellum 300 series sheet underneath to soften the strokes. I tape it to my board on the two side edges.
I center the line art on the paper and lay a low-tack tape across the top to hold it. I place the graphite under the line drawing (graphite side down) and, with a fine point stylus, trace it. I check to make sure it is transferring properly, not too light or too dark.
Pencils
Colored pencil is very versatile. The point of the pencil is important.
Should it be sharp, dull, flat, hard or soft?
A sharp pencil covers the paper with an even layer of color. It can create smooth surfaces, such as a face, shiny objects, or transitions between values when colors overlap.
A dull pencil is suitable for bumps and odd shapes, and is great for surfaces that are not in focus, such as foliage and tree.
Hard or soft? Hard pencils such as Prismacolor Verithin and Col-Erase will lay in a first light coat without establishing too much color. The softer pencils lay it in more quickly, so it takes a lighter hand.

Luminance White #6901
You can use Pan Pastels to bring out the vibrancy of the colors; Pastel Pencils work to smooth the colors a touch more if you wish. (optional)
