Step 6 – The Lady Cardinal, Eye and Brim
Colored pencil starts with the darkest areas on the subject. Here it is the eye. Light Cadmium Red is the first color in the eye, followed by Deep Scarlet Lake. Lightly add these colors to the brim area and around the beak as well. A good layer of Dark Indigo will darken the eye. Burnt Sienna is next around the brim; do not cover the red altogether. Place two layers
of Cadmium Orange on the beak, skipping the small white highlight on top. Leave the highlight and some Cadmium Orange showing, and place Light Cadmium Red in the left corner. Use your Deep Scarlet Lake to the extreme left on the beak to darken. Dark Indigo and Cadmium Red Light will bring out the blackish parts on the brim. Burnish the eye with Black. Burnish the beak and brim with Colorless Blender because you do not want to lose the color there. Use your judgement in these small areas. Pull your colors out into the orange areas. I placed a tiny sparkle in the eye with a utility knife (optional).
Step 7 – The Body and Tail
Starting at the head, cover the whole bird with Light Yellow Glaze but leave the white feather area at the bottom by the branch clear. Do the tail with the same color. Notice the highlight areas on either side of the body – leave them the light color. Using Cadmium Orange go halfway down the breast rounding out the sides with this color but leaving the Light Yellow Glaze at the bottom next to the white feathers. Reinforce this Light Yellow Glaze and blend the orange and yellow with small circular strokes. Sometimes you can coax stubborn spots to move with your Tombow eraser. Layer
the tail skipping the small white lines. Begin to darken the shadowed areas on the head that are marked, carry it down to the dark part on the neck with light pressure. Going back to the dark head, layer Bistre and then Manganese Violet to darken even more, until you are satisfied. Use Light Cadmium Red again if you need to. Keep checking the original for guidance. Burnish with Dark Cadmium Yellow and Luminance White or the Colorless Blender.
Use Dark Cadmium Orange on the tail leaving the two white stripes free of color. Then place two layers of Light Cadmium Red and one or two layers of Deep Scarlet Lake. The bottom section has two layers of Caput Mortuum Violet. Burnish with Colorless Blender. Your Lady Cardinal is finished.
There is an old native folk tale that the sighting of a cardinal brings much good luck! May this prove true for you!
