When one of your besties has a Halloween birthday, dreaming up fun Halloween designs is always in the back of your mind. That’s exactly how this project came about after I found a reasonably priced old globe at a thrift shop. Unfortunately, finding affordable globes is a challenging task. That’s why I searched until I found
the globes from IKEA. As of this printing, they are standard stock in their stores and can also be ordered online. This project would also be fun on a large cheese box with the sky all over the lid and the houses and other ground features around the sides of the box. I hope you have fun playing with this pattern. Please enlarge or shrink the patterns to fit your surface.
COLOR MIXES
Lamp (Ebony) Black is used in three (3) ways. Mix 1
Opaque Lamp (Ebony) Black: houses, tombstones, bats, witch, black cat, flags, pumpkins, windowpane lines using just enough water or medium to make the paint flow smoothly. Later, after you put washes on the trees, you will come back and put in a few dark branches in the bushes and the trees.
Mix 2
Medium Translucent Lamp (Ebony) Black: tree trunks and bush and branches. Reinforce with a second coat to give texture. You will use this kind of mix with Snow (Titanium) White for painting ghosts later on.
Mix 3
Very Transparent Wash Lamp (Ebony) Black: first layer of tree trunks and branches, the foliage around bushes and trees. Remember, it’s much easier to start with a thinner mix of paint and medium and add more pigment if needed than trying to lighten a mix that was too concentrated to start.
PREPARATION
Because the IKEA globes come painted in matte black, there is almost no prep work. We will repaint over the bracket and metal fittings at the end.
If you are working on an old globe, proceed carefully because the paper cover and glue may be fragile. If the surface is very clean with no visible dirt or oils, gently clean with rubbing alcohol or a water-only baby wipe (no lint). Do not scrub until you have tested the surface. After cleaning dirt and oily spots, gently wipe with barely damp paper towels until you are happy with the surface. If the paper starts lifting during cleaning, the easiest solution is to forget wet cleaning. Dry-wipe the surface, touch up with glue if needed, and spray with a light coat of Krylon Clear Matte Spray. When the matte spray is completely dry, give the whole surface a quick coat of DecoArt Paint Adhesion Medium and continue with prep. You may choose to paint the metal bracket and poles.
