Note: I very rarely use a sealer mixed with my basecoat paint. With the wood I use, I usually decide it’s not necessary.
This project is the exception. Since the globes are almost always covered in a paper or paper/plastic covering and can be unpredictable, I don’t want layer upon layer of wet paint to gradually erode the globe surface or soften the glue, so I use sealer on the first two (2) coats on this project.
LET’S PAINT
Using your finger or knuckle as a pivot on the bottom stand of the globe, hold the white chalk pencil point to the globe about a quarter of the way up from the south pole. Holding the pencil firmly in place, rotate the globe to extend this line around the bottom. Close counts. This line is just an estimate of where your sky will end.
Basecoat the upper part of the globe with 1-3 coats of Snow (Titanium) White paint plus DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer or White Gesso. The paint and sealer will require more coats. Follow the latitude lines of the globe, stroking around the globe parallel to the equator. Your curves will be tighter as you get to the north pole. Stroke direction is important. Basecoat does not have to be completely opaque but make it more white and with less gray showing. Your sky colors will be more brilliant on white.
To start the sky, reflect on your knowledge of color theory. As you move from one color on the color wheel to the next, colors will stay bright and clear, blending beautifully. However – if, for example, you leave yellow paint in your brush as you move past pink and into purple, your colors will start to get muddy. Purple and yellow are complementary colors and therefore mix to a gray, muddied brown. Blend between colors but as you move down the color progression, stop and clean your brush and start with pure color as you move to the next color. This process takes a while. Keep going round and round your globe, reinforcing
