SOURCES
• Medium Wooden Laser Cut Box purchased from Hobby Lobby - Woodpile #1304138-M
This nice laser cut box design has inspired me to incorporate the dot painting, which has become so popular recently, as another reference for decorative painters. I have put my own twist on using the mandala dot painting with my design. I also like to add feet to my projects whenever possible.
PREPARATION
The preparation of this surface is tedious, but necessary. Be methodical about it. Make it fun and take your time. When you begin the dotting, remember to allow drying time for the dots.
LET’S PAINT
BOX
Sand, dust, seal the entire wood box with DecoArt Multi- Purpose Sealer, dry, and lightly sand to a smooth surface. Trace pattern onto tracing paper.
Using the 3/4" wash brush, basecoat inside of the box, bottom, and back panel with Lamp (Ebony) Black. Use a sponge tool to go over the laser-cut areas and to avoid slopping onto edges.
Using the #12 flat brush, basecoat the top edge of the box and the top half of the ball feet with Lamp (Ebony) Black.
Measure distance along checked side edges (approximately 1 inch), using ruler, and pull this along the backside of the box to complete the checked design around the box. Using the same #12 flat brush, basecoat this area and the bottom half of the wood knobs with Snow (Titanium) White.
Apply pattern from tracing paper to the blank backside of the box using white graphite. To help the colors show up well, basecoat all the inside pattern areas with Snow (Titanium) White.
Most color basecoating will require using either the #8 filbert brush for the flower petals and larger leaves and the #2 filbert brush for the smaller leaves and flowing stem areas.
FLOWERS
Basecoat petals of large flowers with Orange Twist using #8 filbert brush.
Basecoat all stems and some random cutout areas with Foliage Green using the #2 filbert brush or the #3 round brush.
Basecoat larger leaf areas randomly with Hauser Dark Green or Hauser Medium Green.
Basecoat smaller leaves on flowing stems with Hauser Medium Green using #3 round brush.
Using the 3/8" angular brush, float along the top edge of each smaller leaf with Lavender and the outside edges of Hauser Medium Green and Foliage Green cutouts on top of the box (see Step-by-Steps).
• Four two-inch wooden ball knobs for feet purchased at Hobby Lobby - Woodpile #165852
• Stylus and mandala dotting tools are available at Hobby Lobby or Michaels.
