OIL
TREE TRUNK
STEP 1: With the no. 8 chisel shader and Raw Umber+Titanium White (2:1), paint the base of the trunk. Next, prepare a mixture of Raw Umber+tch Lamp Black (1+tch), and with the no. 3 round and paint the trunk veins carrying broken lines forming squares and rectangles on the surface.
STEP 2: Continue using the same brush with Raw Umber+Titanium White (2:1) add Titanium White to highlight part of the bark of the tree trunk to give it shape and texture.
With the no. 10 chisel shader and Burnt Umber+Burnt Sienna (1:1), paint the wood below the tiger. Add Burnt Umber+Burnt Sienna+tch Lamp Black (1:1:tch) to the dark areas.
TIGER
BASECOAT MIX: Raw Sienna+tch Cadmium Orange (1+tch)
With the no. 8 chisel shader and Lamp Black, paint the tiger stripes placing the brush at 45 degree angle to the surface canvas, creating jagged edges. Do not leave out any of the lines and follow the direc-
tions indicated in the pattern on page 37.
With the no. 6 chisel shader and Raw Sienna+tch Cadmium Or-
ange (1+tch), basecoat the rest of tiger body except the white areas. Using the same brush with Davy’s Gray, paint the white areas.
Add Titanium White to Burnt Sienna to get a flesh color, and with that mixture using the no. 6 chisel shader, paint the inside of the ears and begin to paint fur.
Mix Basecoat Mix+Cadmium Yellow Pale (1:2), and dilute with turpentine. Using the no. 1 script liner, paint the first layer of hairs in the orange area of the animal in the direction the fur. (See pat- tern.) Please note that when painting the hair the paint must be diluted with turpentine.
The sequence to paint the fur is: Load the brush; Download the surplus on the pallet; Support the brush on the surface; Slide it; and lift. Paint a full coat of short hairs on the body of the tiger and long hairs when painting the fur on the head. Next, lighten the color by
adding more Cadmium Yellow Pale and paint a second layer of hair. In the gray area of the tiger, the fur is made with Titanium White using the same technique and respecting the direction of the stroke
indicated in the illustration on page 35.
Using a no. 6 chisel shader, gently fade Burnt Sienna with the
basecoat in the ears, on the nose to eye level, in the tear, under the chin, and at the junction of the legs. Repeat the operation with Burnt Umber and integrating colors.
EARS
With the liner brush and Titanium White, paint hairs short and thin on the inside of the ends of the ears. Then, with the same brush and Titanium White, paint long hairs from the inside out in both ears. Finally, using the liner and Lamp Black, paint short and thin hairs in the outline of both ears.
