The big wave should get smaller moving from the left to the right. This adds dimension and interest by the opposite angles of the clouds and lightning.
STEP 3
GLAZING
Look at the overall painting and decide if more adjustments are needed to darken or lighten its different elements. Paint a very thin glaze of Graphite+water (1:8) over areas pushing them further into the background. To make the large ship come forward, paint the glaze over the smaller ship using the 1" flat. Also, do this to the background waves under the mountains making the mid-ground and foreground waves more important. Glaze over the big wave and quickly wipe off highlights with a clean no. 3 round. This can be repeated on the sail of the large ship the same way.
HIGHLIGHTING
The clouds and lightning are more important in this seascape, as well as the big curling wave in the foreground. Glazing is the best method of controlling distractions and can be done as many times as necessary to achieve this goal. You may also need to add more highlights to the edges of the clouds so they are slightly lighter and brighter than the lightning and big wave. Remember to dampen first, then add the highlights as previously instructed.
VARNISH
Apply several coats of DecoArt Matte Polyurethane Varnish over the scene to protect from spills or spatters using the 1" flat before painting the rim.
RIM
Using the rectangular kitchen sponge with Medium Dark Gray Mix, basecoat the flat area of the rim and raised design. My raised design has grapes, vines and leaves. Using the no. 3 round, I se- lected Light Gray Mix for all the leaves, Dark Gray Mix for the grapes, and Medium Dark Gray Mix for the vines. Simply break down your design components the same way, and the results are easy to accomplish.
After drying, apply a thin glaze of Graphite over the raised design using the no. 3 round. Dry and wipe the glaze off to reveal the base color using a dampened paper towel. Apply a thin coat of DecoArt Matte Polyurethane Varnish using the 1" flat for the flat areas and no. 3 round for the raised design. Dry and apply DecoArt Metallic Lustre Black Shimmer using a soft finger cloth to all the grapes. Next, apply DecoArt Metallic Lustre Silver Spark on the leaves and vines the same way. Gently buff using a clean area of the soft cloth. Apply varnish as previously instructed.
