P. 55
Soften, here and there, by pouncing over the lines with the 3⁄8" crown brush. The lightning is painted using the no. 1 liner with the Light Gray Mix. Dry the surface and then dampen, adding touches of Snow White to highlight areas on top of the previous lightning lines the same way. Pounce to soften with the 3⁄8" crown brush if needed.
Notice the lightning seems to be highlighting inner areas of the storm cloud. This is painted by using the tip of the 3⁄8" crown brush with Medium Light Gray Mix, scumbled in small areas over the lightning. Keep this delicate and horizontal, next pounce over these highlights to soften as shown in step two of the Step-by-Step on page 51.
RAIN
Make sure the storm cloud and lightning are dry, then dampen with clean water and the 1" flat. Load the chisel edge of the 1⁄4" blade brush with Dark Gray Mix and tap off the ex- cess paint on the palette. Lightly drag the rain in a slightly diagonal fashion starting along the left side of the lightning and stopping at the ocean. Repeat this again along the right side and at the base of the lightning. Add highlights the same way using Light Gray Mix with the Dark Gray Mix as shown on the step two of the Step-by-Step on page 51.
SHIPS
Dampen the surface and re-highlight the light side of the sails with a side-load of Snow White using the no. 4 flat. Only do this to the large ship, as the smaller one should look fur- ther away. Darken the shading on the sails with Graphite the same way. Note: To side-load means one color on one side of the bristles. To prepare the brush, dip in clean water, blot on a paper towel — one time so it will still be damp, not dripping — and lay along the edge of a paint puddle. Drag the bristles loading with paint, several times, until one side of the bristles is full and the other clean.
OCEAN
Dampen the surface and highlight a few of the lighter waves with Snow White and the no. 3 round. Also, paint waves in front of the bows of the ships the same way. Look at the big wave at the base of the ocean. If it needs more highlights, dampen and paint Snow White sparkles on the top of the wave. To darken the base of this wave, float a side-load of Graphite under the top of the wave using the no. 4 flat.
The largest foreground waves should have plenty of sparkles and splashes using Snow White painted with the no. 3 round.
