SOURCES
I love painting on charger plates or trays from the craft store. They are relatively inexpensive (especially when you use a coupon!) and there is very little preparation.
I particularly loved the muted metallic border of this one and thought it just perfect for the non-traditional colors of these autumn pumpkins.
PREPARATION
Using the 1" wash brush, apply a coat of the DecoArt Chalky Gesso to the flat surface of the tray where the design will be painted. Leave the tray border alone. Unlike regular acrylic basecoating or painting, the gesso works best if you apply
a coat of medium thickness (not too thin). Brush it on well, trying to keep it relatively smooth. Let the first coat dry well and then apply another. No sanding needed. Use the 1" wash brush to basecoat the flat surface with solid coverage of Charcoal Grey. Let dry.
Trace pattern and transfer only the lines for the pumpkins. Leave off the leafy branches for now.
LET’S PAINT
General note – all shading and highlighting is done with floated color using the appropriate size angular brush for the area you are working. To keep your floats soft and smooth, dampen area first with clean water, float your color and tap with a mop.
I repeat all of my shading and highlighting twice before moving on to the next value.
The Step-by-Step worksheets show the process for ALL pumpkins and stems regardless of their colors. Just apply the technique using the colors called for with that particular pumpkin.
