Tip: Use an easel to avoid getting your fingers into linseed oil and paint while working on the panel. Blu-Tack (a reusable adhesive material) can be used to adhere the panel to a larger backing board.
I like to use a grid system to divide the design with three vertical and three horizontal lines on both the line drawing and the panel (see Preparation for more information).
PREPARATION
Transfer the design with gray graphite paper.
Apply a very thin layer of cold pressed linseed oil using an old brush. Wipe off most of it with a paper towel, being careful not to remove the graphite lines.
Load a #4 angular with Value 7 Background Mix, thinned with linseed oil and cover the graphite lines.
Alternate method with grids: Apply a very thin layer of linseed oil with an old brush. Wipe off most of it with a paper towel.
Load a #4 angular brush with Value 7 Background Mix, thinned with a bit of linseed oil, and draw the division lines onto the panel.
Mark points for the height and width of each element using the same mix and brush.
Finally, draw out the design freehand using the thinned Value 7 Background Mix.
