Step 1: Dress the No. 4 bright brush with linseed oil, pinch it and load with the Value 5 Narcissi Trumpet Mix and place it in the center of each of the trumpets, on the top edge of the outer part of the trumpet of the left narcissus and at the base of the right trumpet.
Pinch the brush and load it with Value 6 Narcissi Trumpet Mix and place it beside the Value 5 areas and within the “valley” of each of the trumpet ripples.
Step 2: Pinch the No. 4 bright brush and load with the Value 8 Narcissi Trumpet Mix; place it next to the Value 6 areas. Pinch the brush and load the Value 8.5 Narcissi Trumpet Mix and place it in the remaining open areas; blend if needed.
Step 3: Pinch the No. 4 bright brush and load with the Value 9 Narcissi Trumpet Mix; build highlights on each trumpet. Build the highlights on the left narcissus a bit further with the Value 9.5 Trumpet Mix. Load a bit of Cadmium Yellow onto the brush and add this cooler light yellow next to some of the highlights on both trumpets.
Load a No. 1 round brush with Value 9 Narcissi Trumpet Mix and pull a ragged edge around the trumpet. Add a lighter highlight in a few areas of the ruffled edge with a bit of Titanium White. Before painting the stamens, deepen the center of the trumpet with a bit of the Value 6 Leaves & Stems Mix. Load the Value 8.5 Narcissi Trumpet Mix onto the No. 1 round brush, thin it with a bit of linseed oil, and pull a few short, curved stamens from the center of each trumpet. Add a few lighter stamens using the Value 9 Narcissi Trumpet Mix. Add a few darker stamens with the Value 5 Narcissi Trumpet Mix + a touch of Transparent Oxide Red. Add tiny dots at the ends of the stamens using the same colors.
FINISHING
Allow the painting to dry for approximately six months or until it is completely dry. Pour some of Neil’s Best Dammar Varnish onto a clean wax palette and use the 2" varnish brush to apply an even layer of varnish. Allow to dry and apply an additional coat for good protection.
