OIL
Double-load the brush with the dark area mix and a mix of Ultramarine Blue+Mauve. This mix will go on the left sides of the leaves and under the folds and bends. Now randomly apply Turquoise to the dark areas of some of the leaves.
TOP IRIS UPPER PETALS
Using the no. 6 Floral Round and a thin mix of Titanium White+Bob Ross Oil Paint Medium+Ivory Black+Mauve+Ultramarine Blue (1:1:tch:tch:tch) sketch in the petals over the graphite lines. With Ultramarine Blue+Mauve+Bob Ross Oil Paint Medium (2:1:1), add shadows to the center of the top petal, and behind and to each side of it.
Next, use the 1⁄2" Floral Bright to underpaint the upper petals with Titani- um White+Bob Ross Oil Paint Medium+Ivory Black+Mauve+Ultramarine Blue (1:1:tch:tch:tch). Be sure to follow the Stroke Direction Diagram on page 113 as you paint. The direction of each stroke is very important. Add a bit of Cadmium Yellow Light to the brush, and place tints here and there on the petals. Wipe and pinch the color from the brush and dry-brush on a few Titanium White highlights here and there.
LOWER PETALS
Using the no. 6 Floral Round and a thin mix of Mauve+Ultramarine Blue+Bob Ross Oil Paint Medium, sketch in the petals over the graphite lines. Now add more Ultramarine Blue and Mauve to this mix and add shadows to the centers of the petals. With the 1⁄2" Floral Bright and Mauve+Ultramarine Blue+Bob Ross Oil Paint Medium, underpaint these petals. Again, make sure you closely follow the Stroke Direction Diagram.
Pinch and wipe paint from the brush, and then pick up a bit of Titanium White. Dry-brush highlights onto these petals. Using the no. 2 script liner, add contrasting vein lines in Mauve+Ultramarine Blue+Bob Ross Oil Paint Medium to all petals.
BOTTOM IRIS UPPER PETALS
Using the no. 6 Floral Round, apply Cadmium Yellow Light+Bob Ross Oil Paint Me- dium over the petals’ graphite lines. With a thin mix of Cadmium Yellow Light+Alizarin Crimson, shade the petals’ centers. Now add Mauve to this mix and define the areas between the petals. With Cadmium Yellow Light+Titanium White on the 1⁄2" Floral Bright, create the petals’ shapes by pulling long, flowing overlapping strokes. Pick up the brush when you reach the shadow area.
Clean the paint from the brush and then pick up Titanium White. Wiping and pinching the brush often as you work, dry-brush highlights on the edges of the petals.
LOWER PETALS
Using the no. 6 Floral Round and a thin mix of Mauve+Ultramrine Blue, paint over the petals’ graphite lines. Now add a touch more Ultramarine Blue and Mauve to this mix and create the shadow areas in the petals’ centers.
