24 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 4, 2014
In recent years, I have noticed that the number of young people taking an interest in painting is dwindling. This inspired me to start teaching simple projects to children in
my shop, The Tole Bridge. If children become interested in painting at an early age, they will continue to paint as they move toward adulthood. They might distance themselves from painting for a few years while going to college or into the workforce, but the interest will still remain. As adults, they will seek out painting classes that will rekindle their passion. I would like to do my part to boost the painting industry by bringing young people into it. Some of them might become teachers, too. Encourage your children and grandchildren to paint. It will give you all great joy!
PREPARATION
Use a 1" flat brush to slip-slap Calypso Blue and Indian Turquoise over the entire canvas. Both colors should be vis- ible (they should not mix to create one solid color) so that the background has a nice texture. Allow this to dry completely, and then transfer the main lines of the pattern (the details will be transferred later).
