  ACRYLIC
 VASES
Two cone-shaped vases sit at the bottom of the frame. Note that these vases are mirror images of one another, and so highlights and shadows are placed in opposite areas.
The scrolls on the bottoms of the vases will be cre- ated later.
STEP 1:With the no. 4 round, basecoat the vases with Uniform Blue.
Using the no. 4 filbert, float a shadow of Midnight Blue un- der the lip of each vase. Place a shadow of the same along the left side of the vase on the left. The corresponding shadow on the vase on the right lies along its right side. Next, pick up a touch of Warm White on the dirty brush and lighten the vase’s center. Apply the same color to the right edge of the top of the vase on the left, and the left edge of the top of the vase on the right. With a pencil or white colored pencil, lightly reapply the pattern lines of the curved, diagonal lines.
STEP 2:Continue to bring out the vases’ highlights by adding Warm White, small amounts at a time. With Lamp Black on the no. 2 liner, go over the curved, diagonal lines.
SCROLLS
STEP 1:With Uniform Blue on the no. 2 round, basecoat the scrolls.
STEP 2: With a brush-mix of Uniform Blue+Warm White on the no. 2 filbert, add highlights to the curved parts of the scrolls. With Lamp Black on the no. 2 filbert, apply the black shade lines.
STEP 3:With a touch of Warm White on the no. 2 liner, apply small white highlights in the Uniform Blue+Warm White highlights.
TAN ROSE
STEP 1: With Fawn on the no. 4 filbert, basecoat the rose. With the no. 4 round, apply True Ochre to the rose’s center. With a pencil or white colored pencil, add the lines for the triangular seeds in the rose’s center. You can also simply paint them in, according to the next step.
STEP 2: Create a mix of True Ochre+Dark Chocolate (3:1). Using the no. 4 filbert, float this mix on each petal, where it nears the rose’s center.
Highlight the tips of each petal (both the outer and the inner petals) with Fawn+Warm White on the no. 2 round. Use the no. 2 liner and Alizarin Crimson+tch Lamp
Black to line in the seeds.
STEP 3: Lighten the Fawn+Warm White highlights on the tips of the petals by adding a touch more Warm White to
this mix and applying it with the no. 2 liner. The highlights in the tips of each seed are oval dots of True Ochre+Warm White. Add a small dot of Warm White to the tips of these highlights.
RED ROSES AND
BAVARIAN ROSES
STEP 1: With the no. 4 filbert, basecoat the red roses with Antique Rose. Looking at the picture of Step 1, you will notice that some of the Lamp Black background is allowed to show between the petals, and in the centers of the red roses. When this is dry, use the pencil or a white colored pencil to lightly apply the lines of the petals. Alternatively, these can simply be painted in according to Step 2.
STEP 2: Create a mix of Antique Rose+Warm White. With the no. 2 filbert, add the highlights that create the petals in the bowl of the rose, and the highlights on the outer petals.
Using the no. 4 filbert, float a shadow of Alizarin Crimson on each petal, where it nears the rose’s bowl. The lines that lightly separate the petals in the bowl are of the same color.
STEP 3:Lighten the mix from Step 2 by adding a touch more Warm White. With the no. 2 filbert, apply this mix to the highlights from Step 2. These lighter highlights should be smaller than the previous highlights. Using the no. 2 liner double-loaded with True Ochre and Warm White, add the very small pollen dots in the centers.
YELLOW ROSES
STEP 1:With the no. 4 filbert, basecoat these roses with True Ochre. Add a touch of Warm White to the brush and lightly create the highlights at the end of each petal, and around the center of the flower and top of the bowl. Light- ly apply the petal lines, if necessary.
With the no. 4 round, apply Red Iron Oxide to the center of the flower. The center’s shade is done with Dark Chocolate on the same brush.
STEP 2: Using the no. 2 round, lighten the previous high- lights by adding a touch more Warm White to the mix. STEP 3: With the no. 2 liner, lighten the highlights with a bit more Warm White. Finally, add the Warm White dots to the flower’s center and base (where it meets the stem). The leaves and stems are created following the instruc- tions previously described.
THREE-PETAL FLOWERS
STEP 1: With the no. 4 round, basecoat these flowers with Antique Rose. Lightly apply the petal lines, if necessary.
