LET’S PAINT
CANDLE
STEP 1: Use Silver Grey to base the candle and the votive cup. The graphite lines should still show. The pigment will not be too visible on the surface because it’s almost the same color and value as the suede board. It’s just enough pigment on the surface so that when the blue colors are applied they will easily glide on and not adhere in a spotty fashion.
STEP 2: Use Light Cobalt Blue to shade the bottom, sides, front and back lip, and center of the candle. Do not apply through the rim of the glass. Apply a bit of Light Cobalt Blue on the center of the can- dle, under the rim of the glass below the shine. The first application will be very light; work for an even gradation of color over the Silver Grey. Apply a second time, going darker around the outer edges. Use a back-and-forth motion of the pencil to help you blend the strokes. STEP 3: If needed, use Silver Grey to over-stroke the Light Cobalt Blue to blend and soften the color.
STEP 4: Use Deep Cobalt to darken the shaded areas from step two. STEP 5: Use Medium Grey to darken the left and right bottom corners.
STEP 6: Use Lyra White to lighten the inside center of the candle, around the lip, and down the light area on the right side.
STEP 7: Use Gold Ochre to accent the right side, above the dark shading, but below the light value, and along the top outside lip. STEP 8: Use Dark Carmine to accent the bottom right, in the shad- ed area under the rim of the glass below the shine, and the upper left. STEP 9: Use Aquamarine to accent the upper outside lip about a finger’s width from the left, under the wick, and between the shines on the lip on the right side.
STEP 10: Use Prismacolor White to apply the sharp, bright shine on the upper lip.
