JUDY DUARTE
PROMOTING HER PASSION FOR THE DECORATIVE ARTS
Judy Duarte, an SDP member since 1977, recently opened a decorative painting studio called Brush & Palette. In her studio she loves promoting the Society of Decorative Painters with a wonderful SDP display of The Decorative Painter magazine next to her project that was in 2017 Winter Issue,
The Clematis Suitcase, along with membership forms and pamphlets.
A few months after she opened
Brush & Painter she started
teaching decorative painting. Artist
friends from several states have
stopped by her new studio to check
it out and take classes. She loves
teaching and is very proud of her
students. Trudy Oliver, Pam Goff, and Barb Pfeffer are students of hers who had never held a brush in their hands before. What wonderful work they are doing under her instruction. And what fun!
MaryAnn Echols, another student of hers, comes from the world of abstract painting. In the beginning, MaryAnn had quite a challenge learning the technique of decorative painting. She and Judy worked together as a team to help her get used to a little more controlled and exact style. MaryAnn worked very hard and by the third week she began to feel more relaxed and happy with her results.

The great part of MaryAnn’s story is that after
she finished her piece, one of her good friends asked
if she could purchase her painting. Judy exclaimed
she didn’t know who was more excited, MaryAnn or herself. MaryAnn chose to give her friend her sunflower painting as a gift rather than selling it to her.
