 Show & Tell
DESTRUCTION IN HOUSTON!
by Sandy Aubuchon cda
I’m sure everyone remembers the 2017 damage
by Hurricane Harvey with the rain and flooding in
the Houston, Texas, area. It was the most powerful
hurricane to hit Texas in half a century. I live in St.
Louis, Mo., and watched the news about this disaster
on the television. The damage was massive – people were in need of food, water, housing, clothing, and that was just a few of the many things that they needed.
Being a painter, I thought about the loss of paints, brushes, and
surfaces. It takes many years to gather all those things. Months after
the flooding, Houston is now coming back, but there are still many victims of
Hurricane Harvey that are waiting for repairs and to replace the items that were lost forever.
While people were rebuilding their lives, I thought about painting supplies. How could we help our SDP members? Their art supplies were at the bottom of the list of replace- ments. I thought about it for a while and came up with the idea that I could volunteer my time to teach a “Sharing Seminar” in Houston and asked different manufacturers to supply products to give to those who attended. This just might help lift their spirits a bit.
I wondered to myself, “How could I get everything to work out?” St. Louis is a long distance from Houston. I decided to call a painter friend in Houston and she recommended that I call Ann Wilson, who is a decorative painter and a member of several Houston chapters. Ann was a lot of help and offered to get a venue for the seminar and store the supplies for several months. I could not have done the seminar without the help of Ann Wilson.
Next I called DecoArt Paint, Royal Brush, Tara Materials Fredrix Canvas, and Walnut Hollow Wood. All four of these companies said they would donate anything I needed.
DecoArt and Royal Brush also paid for my airfare. I believe that there is not another industry that would do so much for people they do not know.
There were 40 decorative painters in attendance – members from Decorative Artists of Texas, Decorative Painters of Pasadena, Pride of Texas Decorative Artists, and Painting Pals of Humble Texas. The ladies did not have all of their supplies replaced, but they are on the way to start painting again.
I like to describe decorative painting as a sharing with other painters. Our painting manufacturers go above and beyond to help when we are in need. I want to thank Deco Art Paint, Royal Brush, Tara Materials Fredrix Canvas, and Walnut Hollow Wood for their donations to the Society of Decorative Painters’ members who were victims of the hurri- cane. A lot was lost in this devastating disaster.
I have been decorative paint- ing for more than 50 years and this Sharing Seminar was very special to me. I know if some- thing like this happened in St. Louis or any other city, other members would step up to help their painting friends.
Please send a thank you to the companies who help sponsor Sharing Seminar.
