LET’S PAINT SKY
Using the background brush, brush-mix a light to me- dium pink value with Titanium White+Cadmium Red Light+ Alizarin Crimson (1:1:tch). Begin at the top and basecoat in the pink areas of the sky working on the bottom corner of the brush. Vary the pinks by picking up a bit more Cadmium Red Light and/or Alizarin Crimson from time to time; just keep them very soft and pale. Leave the yellow area just above the hills and the smaller blue areas in the sky unpainted.
Clean the brush, dry well, and pick up Titanium White+ Cadmium Yellow Medium mixed to a soft yellow. Lay in the sunny yellow area at the lowest point, or “V,” where the moun- tains meet, stretching out the color to both sides. Move the brush horizontally to create a windblown effect. As you begin to blend the yellow into the pinks, again just work on the bot- tom corner of the brush with the same movements. Some of this yellow can blend halfway up or farther into the sky, letting it show here and there among the pinks.
Clean the brush again, dry well, and mix a pastel blue with Titanium White+Cerulean Blue+Cadmium Red Light (1+1+tch). Begin working near the top of the sky, blending and softening the blues into the pinks. Continue to work on the corner of the brush to create the clouds and until you are pleased with the colors. There really isn’t much blue in this sky, and none in the yellow area near the hills.
