This design is based on the song “Barbara Allen,” a tra- ditional Scottish ballad written circa 1660. I have included the lyrics on page 39. This is one of my favorite seventeenth century songs and I always ask them to play it when we visit Colonial Williamsburg.
LET’S PAINT BACKGROUND
Sand, seal, and sand again. Basecoat with Slate Grey; trace on pattern for background only. Using dry brush, pick up Slate Grey, take excess out on palette, pick up Grey Sky in dirty brush, take out excess and add highlight to centers of each section. Repeat, picking up more Grey Sky in dirty brush, taking out excess, and adding to centers again, but not as wide as first highlight. Shade each section where it lays un- der another and next to each section with Neutral Grey. Thin Neutral Grey with water and wash over entire area to push this into the background. Dry and trace on rose pattern.
