This project takes on a whole new way to capitalize on can- vas painting and faux toenails! On my way to my 50th class re- union in Trinidad, Colo., we flew into the Denver airport and my pedicure “artwork” quickly became the subject of attention and speculation.
With this project, everyone has their opinion as to adding nail art, or a toe ring or changing the color of sandals, or creating the thong style. I had one rodeo queen ask about painting on her boots!
Kick off your shoes and look at your feet. I can’t think of better reference materials! Take advantage of shoe catalogs for ideas or match your shoes with an outfit or season (Halloween, Christmas or Easter). Just imagine a witch’s toenails or Mrs. Claus. Just have fun!
I have kept this palette simple with two colors of blue for shoes, three colors of skin tone, and red for toenails. Lamp Black and Ultra White are “buckle colors” and help to pop the stitching and deepen or brighten the sandal. I use wet-on-wet to begin blocking in the sandals and then allow drying for fabric detail. Those of you canvas/fabric painters understand water goes a long way.
Notice where the shadows fall creating the curvature of the toes and highlights on top of toes and bright nail color.
My pattern packet has step-by-step explanations of color placement and progression. Use a hand sanitizer type of prod- uct to help lift up mistakes. Luckily for us, DecoArt SoSoft fabric paints are washable, making your pedicure washable (machine gentle cycle, air dry). Please don’t hesitate to email me your ques- tions – and send me photos at grammie1434@q.com.
