FLOWER, LEAVES AND STEMS
STEP 1: Mix a light and medium value Ultramarine Blue and Alizarin Crimson. This can be toward the blue or violet tones; the choice is yours. Wet one petal at a time and paint in differ- ent values of color. Blend out and let dry. The white irises are shaded with light and medium values of color.
Mix a light and medium value Hooker’s Green Dark and Gamboge Hue. With the no. 8 round brush, paint over the leaves and steams. Paint Gamboge Hue on some of the stems under the flowers. It is that simple, just paint them with differ- ent values of your green color. To get a darker green mix add a little Burnt Sienna to Hooker’s Green and paint some shadows on some of the leaves.
STEP 2: To do the darker value you do not have to wet the petal first, just put the darker value on dry paper. Some areas on the petals you will blend out to a lighter value. Beards on the flowers are basecoated with Gamboge Hue and little lines with Alizarin Crimson are painted on while still a little damp. Keep these lines light so they will look natural.
