GENERAL DIRECTIONS
Consult the Step-by-Step and the Value Placement Chart on pages 19 and 20.
STEP 1: Place the values on one item at a time (i.e., leaf, vio- let, egg, or basket slat).
STEP 2: Blend where any two values touch.
STEP 3: Highlights, shadows, tints, accents, and details can be added while wet or dry. There are two ways to add ac- cents, highlights and low dark touches. They may be either dry-brushed or glazed. If dry-brushing, no glazing medium is used. If glazing, a miniscule amount of Winsor & Newton Blending & Glazing Medium is applied to the surface before painting.
My preference is to allow Step 3 to dry before adding de- tails, especially on the eggs. You may freehand or transfer the details. Give freehanding a try, especially in decorating the eggs. Eggs are decorated after the highlighting, accenting and shading are complete. Before applying Winsor & Newton Blending & Glazing Medium, make sure the oil underneath is really dry or it will cause it to lift. Apply only a hint of medium to moisten the surface (just moist – not wet!). Thoroughly blot away excess with a tissue before applying paint. Use Winsor & Newton Blending & Glazing Medium to thin paint for line- work, details, and signature.
