COLOR MIXES
THE PALETTE: After placing the tube colors on the palette, mix a puddle of Warm White Mix and another of Black Mix. These will be used throughout the painting. Warm White Mix is made with Titanium White plus pin dots of Cadmium Yellow Pale to make a pale ivory color. It should appear more soft white than yellow.
Combine Burnt Umber with French Ultramarine to make Black Mix. To see if it really is black, make a tiny test spot with some of the mixture and a touch of Titanium White. If the test appears gray, it is a good neutral Black Mix.
With this technique of oil painting, mix a value range of each color on the palette using a palette knife, usually three to five values. These five values are medium, light, highlight, dark, and low-dark. There is nothing wrong with brush-mixing so if you are used to that technique, feel free to do it. Even with a range of values on the palette, one can brush-mix between the values. Warm White Mix: Titanium White+Cadmium Yellow Pale (1:pin dot)
Black Mix: Burnt Umber+French Ultramarine (1:1)

n The Classic Bright are shorter bristled flat brushes. Because oil paints are thick, shorter bristles work better both to apply and to blend the paint.
n Filberts can be used for blending after paint is applied. This is optional.
n Scrollers, or your favorite long liner, are used for leaf veins, pansy face, stems, straw, and details.
n A kneaded eraser is helpful for lifting paint or cleaning up mistakes.
