BACKGROUND BLUE
Blue Mix: French Ultramarine+Cobalt Blue (2:1). Use the Blue Mix to make four values for the background.
Dark: Blue Mix+Titanium White (1:tch). Make enough to use to make the other values.
Medium: Dark Blue Mix+Titanium White (1:1) Light: Medium Blue Mix+Warm White (1:1) Low-Dark: Blue Mix+Black Mix+Titanium White (1:tch:speck)
Paint the background following the Value Placement Map on page 20. Blend where two values meet. Refine the blend- ing by mopping with the largest mop brush. The rim of the tray is left to paint after all the other painting is done.
BASKET
Medium: Raw Sienna+Titanium White (2:1) Light: Medium Mix+Warm White (1:1) Dark: Raw Sienna+Burnt Umber (2:1) Low-Dark or Very Dark: Burnt Umber Highlight: Warm White+Light Mix (1:tch)
LEAVES, STEMS, GRASS, AND GREEN EGG
Green Mix: Blue Mix+Cadmium Yellow Pale (1:1) Medium: Green Mix+Titanium White (1:1)
Light: Medium Green Mix+Warm White (1:1) Highlight: Warm White Mix+Light Green Mix (1:dot) Dark: Green Mix+Black Mix (1:tiny tch) and French Ultramarine (1+tch)
Paint the grass with leaf values or if you would like to leave the area blue, place the darkest blue under the design for a sit-down shadow.
The green egg can be painted a slightly cooler green by adding a touch of each blue value to each value of green.
PURPLE EGGS AND VIOLETS
Medium: Winsor Violet (Dioxazine)+Titanium White (1:1) Light: Medium Mix+Titanium White (1:1)
Highlight: Light Mix+Titanium White (1:1)
Low-Dark: Winsor Violet (Dioxazine)+Burnt Umber or Black Mix to dull it (1:dot)
Dark: Low-Dark Mix+Medium Mix (1:tch)
Accent colors on the violets can be any color from the eggs in the basket. One would usually choose a color to help carry it throughout the painting. I chose pink. Place accents on violets before adding veins. Mopping is used to refine blending on eggs but avoid mopping too much on flow- ers as it can make petals look stiff and plastic. Violet veins are low-dark value. Centers or throats of the violets are the same as the pansy. Using a no. 0 flat brush, fill in the throat area with Medium Yellow Mix and shade at the base with Dark Yellow Mix. The anthers are tiny strokes of thinned Warm White Mix placed using the tip of the liner or droplet brush. The center dot is dark value from the pink eggs that has been made less bright by adding a tiny touch of green.
PANSY, YELLOW EGGS, AND STRAW
Medium: Cadmium Lemon+Cadmium Yellow Pale+ Tita- nium White (1:1:dot)
Light: Medium Mix+Titanium White (1:1)

Dark: Medium Mix+Raw Sienna+Winsor Violet (Dioxa- zine) (1:1:tch)
Alternate Dark: Raw Sienna+Winsor Violet (Dioxazine) (1:tch)
Note: Alternate Dark is used in glazing Step 3 because it is more transparent.
Low-Dark: Burnt Umber+Raw Sienna (1:1)
Pansy Face: Winsor Violet (Dioxazine)+Black Mix (1:1) to darken and dull
Anthers: Warm White (same as the violets)
Straw: Apply design; load the liner brush to pull various yellow lines for the straw. Add some dark yellow lines on the edge of some of the straw.
PINK EGGS, PINK VIOLET, AND RIBBONS
