PREPARATION
Paint the canvas Burnt Umber; allow to dry and give it another coat. Let dry again. Use the Light Mix (see page 36) for the blended background.
BACKGROUND
Blend the background by using the 1" wash to apply the DecoArt Extender & Blending Medium. Soften with the 1" oval mop. (Refer to the color mix chart on page 36 for the background.)
LET’S PAINT
BLENDING THE BACKGROUND
Blend the background wet-into-wet, making it very dark in the upper left corner and lighter as it moves diago- nally across the canvas to the lightest shade in the lower right corner.
Using the 1" wash brush, moisten the entire canvas with DecoArt Extender & Blending Medium, brushing it back and forth across the canvas. You want a thin but well dis- tributed, even layer of the extender with no puddles. Next, load the brush with Background Dark Mix and apply it to the upper left corner moving the brush diagonally toward the center of the canvas. Load the brush with Burnt Um- ber and fill in the middle of the canvas, blending between the dark and medium values in a diagonal motion. Rinse the brush in water and blot dry into a paper towel. Moisten again with DecoArt Extender & Blending Medium, blot on a paper towel and load with Background Light Mix. Start- ing on the bottom right corner, blend into the Background Medium, moving the brush back and forth between values
for a smooth transition. Allow the surface to dry and apply a barrier coat of DecoArt Multi-Surface Sealer+DecoArt Glaz- ing Medium. When dry transfer the lines for the gold bands.
GOLD BANDS
Use painter’s tape to mask off the gold banding. The two horizontal bands at the top of the canvas measure 1 1⁄2 inches down. The two top bands are 7⁄8" wide with a 3⁄8" space be- tween them. It is 1 1⁄2" from the right side of the canvas and 2 1⁄2 " from the left side of the canvas.
The two vertical side bands measure 2 7⁄8" from the top of the canvas and 1 3⁄8" from the left side of the canvas. Each band is 7⁄8" wide with a 3⁄8" space between them. After you have masked off the bands with tape, run your thumbnail across the edge of the tape to enforce the seal to prevent paint from bleeding underneath. Paint the bands True Gold. Let dry. (See Step 1 of the Step-by-Step on page 35.)
Moisten band with DecoArt Extender & Blending Me- dium. Using the no. 10 chisel blender, pick up some Cop- per and chisel horizontally across the top bands. Clean the brush and chisel in some Shimmering Silver. Softly pounce the colors with a 1⁄2" mop. Do the same application for the side banding by vertically chiseling in the colors. Let dry. (See Step 2 of the Step-by-Step on page 35.)
Moisten again with DecoArt Extender & Blending Medium. Apply a thin wash of Rich Espresso to the entire band and this time chisel in Burnt Umber. Soften with a mop. (See Step 3 of the Step-by-Step on page 35.)
Moisten the bands again and highlight the top with Aquamarine+Titanium White (1:tch). Shade by applying Carbon Black underneath the gold bands onto the back- ground. (See Step 4 of the Step-by-Steps on page 35.)
