value, (the light, medium value), tap it onto the waxed palette, then straddle the brush between the two values on the painting surface and start blending the two values together, patting and pulling simultaneously. The brush must pass back and forth between the two values in order to blend and make a smooth transition from one value to the next. You are now ready to blend into the next darker value. To do this, the previous lighter value needs to be replaced with the next darker value; sideload the side of the brush that has the lighter value into the next darker value. Straddle the brush between the two values, blend- ing them together. When blended between the light and
medium values, fully load the brush into the medium value and finish filling in the medium value area. This is usually the largest area of an object. Remember to keep the brush at a 33-degree angle at all times. Sideload the brush into the dark value and proceed blending between the medium and dark values, working toward the inner part of the rose petals where they all connect. You are now ready to blend between the dark and low dark val- ues. The edge of the brush that had medium value is now sideloaded into the low-dark value. Straddle the brush between the dark and low dark area and complete the blending, working the brush toward the inner rose.
